About Me

Gwen Harris – Information Specialist, Instructor and Course Designer

I am an information consultant specializing in Web searching and online education.

I have been teaching Web searching in classrooms and on the Web since 1994, and also designing and supporting online courses in the field of information. Much of the teaching has been through the iSchool Institute at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto.

Currently I teach Mastering Web Searching online, a web-based course provided through the iSchool Institute at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto. In 2001 I received the Institute’s Outstanding Teaching Award.

This web site is my notebook on tools and strategies for searching the web. Years ago, I co-developed The Internet Guide (1996-2002), one of the earliest self-paced web-based courses to build skills in using the Web. It was used widely in Canada by librarians and the volunteer sector. The web search content was transferred to this site – Web Search Guide – which I maintained until around 2010. This version holds the blog on Internet search news and some guides to search.

I have been consultant and instructional designer on several elearning projects for continuing education and for academic terms, many of them delivered through Blackboard learning management system.

My alma maters are Queen’s University – Master of Business Administration, and the University of Toronto – Master of Library Science.

In the summer I abandon the Internet for time on the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario.
