The Weather: Over a Century and a Half of Canada's Weather Data is Now Online Government of Canada. Press Release (July 31) "As the official
keeper of the nation's weather records, Environment Canada maintains a collection of over 200 million observations from over 7,000 sites some dating as far back as 1840." The National Climate Data and Information Archive is at http://www.climate.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/Welcome_e.html.

History: Our Roots (www.ourroots.ca) presents local history. "This unique, online, coast-to-coast record of Canadian local histories reflects the breadth and depth of our country's heritage, and celebrates the diverse landscapes, resources, and people that have contributed to sculpting its rich and ever-evolving national character. " This is a collaboration of " libraries, universities, colleges, archives, historical associations, businesses and individuals". Print materials have been digitized so that pages may be viewed as images. Collection may be browsed or searched by keyword.

Sympatico.ca Overture replaces Google at Sympatico.ca as the search engine. Overture will provide algorithmic search based on Fast/Allthewb, along with paid listings and paid inclusion for all English-language search. Government News: Government of Canada will be enhancing its News Room (news.gc.ca) to have more delivery channels (including RSS), more up to date, and easier searching. The News Room "provides a single access point for Government of Canada news releases, media advisories and background news information in both official languages." Calgary: City of Calgary Deploys Plumtree Corporate Portal To Nearly One Million Residents "Portal Streamlines Public Services and Expands Collaboration For North America's Fastest-Growing City" (July 16, 2003)

From the press release: "The portal makes it easy for Calgary residents to interact with city employees and policy makers, giving them tools to provide feedback on city projects, to request building permits, dog licenses, review their property taxes and more. The City of Calgary is using the portal as a platform for developing Web applications to improve services and to decrease the total cost of providing online transactions for citizens. The public can view The City of Calgary's extranet portal at
http://www.calgary.ca ."

Calgary is using Plumtree Software.

WW1: War Diaries of the First World War at Archivia Net. Yahoo Canada: Yahoo Canada revamped its site and is now more in line with the Yahoo.com form. Main page promotes Yahoo services more - directory is smaller, and Yahoo Movies in Canada is more prominent. Searching pages in Canada for west nile virus produces results similar to those from Google.ca. There is a basic search page at http://ca.search.yahoo.com/. Sympatico and MSN.ca: Sympatico and MSN.ca Web portals to merge Canadian Press (June 16, 2003) -- "The two companies said Monday they will combine the content of Bell's Sympatico.ca and computing tools available from Microsoft's MSN.ca to create a co-branded portal to be available by next spring." Microsoft is also working with Rogers to develop a "mobile office experience".

ProQuest and Canadian News: ProQuest has added 21 newspapers from CanWest and 50 Ontario newspapers including the Toronto Star from TorStar to its online databases and ProQuest Canadian Newsstand products . ProQuest news. (June 23, 2003)

As well, 11 newspapers have been added to eLibrary Canada -- Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Montreal Gazette, National Post, Ottawa Citizen, Regina Leader Post, Saskatoon Star Phoenix, Vancouver Province, Vancouver Sun, Victoria Times Colonist and Windsor Star.
