Here is very great gift from Google search guru Daniel Russell – it is the url to Google’s newspaper archives – Newspaper Archives–Google’s archive… and beyond. He admits that it is “more hidden than it should be” – and in my mind, it shouldn’t be hidden at all. Bookmark it now – http://news.google.com/newspapers .
The list shows the date range covered in the collection. Don’t be dismayed that the Financial Post of Canada is only 1911 to 1918, The Financial Post has some earlier issues and many of the later ones to 1986.
The newspapers are in pdf scanned from the orginals and then OCRd to be made searchable. Some older ones can be hard to read. And – searching takes patience.
Unfortunately, this is browse-only for the newspaper you need, then the same for contents of the newspaper though you can adjust for the date.
To do keyword search across the archives, you may be best off using the date range box to limit to a period.
To limit to a particular newspaper isn’t obvious. There is an advanced search at http://news.google.com/news/advanced_news_search where you can specify under “date added” “in archive” and then may identify the source by its name (and hope you have the name right)
It used to be much easier, but at least we now know the two links for browsing and keyword searching.
