Information Retrieval and Design: There is a great deal wrong with many of the directories built for the Web and being developed for classifying content on company intranets. Marcia Bates, Professor in the Department of Information Studies at the University of California at Los Angeles, identifies 7 areas where improvements are needed in designing for information retrieval: "Classifications, ontologies, indexing vocabularies, statistical properties of databases (including the Bradford Distribution), and staff indexing support systems".
