Search Engines Jupiter Media Metrix has released ratings on search sites based on January 2002 data. Based on counts of unique visitors (rather than total activity) MSN is at the top with 36.3% followed by Yahoo at 33.3% and Google at 24.5%. Altavista trails with 5.7%. AlltheWeb and Open Project Directory didn't make it too the list - too few visitors. (But don't let that dissuade you from using them.) Weblogs: Wired had a piece on this too. "Blah, Blah, Blah and Blog" by Farhad Manjoo on Feb 18. Says weblogs have passed the tipping point and imagined a day when everyone was blogging - including doctors and lawyers. Mentioned Ftrain.com as a particularly stunning weblog - all about words and writing.

Should access be controlled to prevent marketers from using this data? Article also noted that Verisign is developing a universal Whois with all registered domain names including those with country codes.

- There are an estimated 500,000 weblogs and still growing. Most are personal pages, though some have commercial intent or associations. Next market for companies such as Blogger and Userland will be corporate weblogs.
