1901 Census: It's a brute

1901 Census: It's a brute to find, but the National Archives of Canada has put the 1901 Census online - or rather "digitized images of the original census returns, which record age, nationality, religion, profession, income, education, etc for every single resident of Canada on 31 March 1901. " You can search by geographic region - meaning select the province and enter the town or county. These are images and will take time to download and they are hard to read. Before doing anything read the information page about the records and how to search. http://www.archives.ca/02/0201_e.html

National Archives National Archives of Canada announced the expansion of its online collection about French Canada through the acquisition of 22,000 digitized documents from the Archives of France. There are plans for the two countries to digitize more over the next two years. "Once complete, this large-scale project will have added more than 630,000 images to Canadian and French content on the Internet."

It's not easy to find and the National Archives does not mention this collection on its what's-new page. However the press release did give directions: "To see the 22,000 documents and their archival descriptions, go to the National Archives of Canada Web site (www.archives.ca). Once there, go to the Archives' online research tool, ArchiviaNet, click on Alphabetical List of Research Tools and select Colonial Archives. "

Canadians Online "Almost three-quarters of the country is now on-line, a new study from Ipsos-Reid says, up from 68 per cent a year ago. And nearly half of those are broadband users." ... "Broadband, the study concluded, is changing the nature of the Internet in Canada faster than elsewhere, because subscribers use the Internet in dramatically different ways if they have a faster connection. For instance, it said broadband fosters growth in such areas as on-line banking and shopping."
