Job Hunters and the Web: Now job hunting on the web in Canada surpasses online banking and shopping and even music downloading. Ipsos-Reid found that "50 per cent of Canadians connected to the Internet have looked through job postings on-line.". Of those 80% looked at job-posting sites, 62% send their resume by email, 62% researched a company.

MPs and the Web: Members of Parliament in Canada could use the Web more to communicate with constituents. Centre for Collaborative Government found that only 58% of MPs have functional web sites and only 27% used interactive tools to get input from constituents. Canadian Alliance MPs use the Web the most - 89% have web sites.

Amazon Canada Have you seen the Canada Post trucks with de amazon.ca a votre maison? The Globe and Mail, however, reported that Amazon.ca is having problems pricing some books correctly and getting them delivered. Also, I had problems with getting through the payment process. But probably just startup glitches - as Marina Strauss says.

Health Online: A study by NFO CFgroup into Canadian use of online health information found that 75% of Canadian Internet users use the Net to research health concerns. Most visited health sites were the health sections of Sympatico.ca and Yahoo.ca, and Health Canada's Web site.

E-Learning: Canadians like online courses even more than online banking. A study by Ipsos-Reid indicated that 59% were interested in taking a course online and 15% had already done some online work.

Privacy Policies: Computing Canada reported on a meeting convened by the Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian concerning the new Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3). Cavoukian and invited speaker Tim Berners-Lee encouraged companies to adopt P3P to make clear their polices on use of data and user privacy. P3P is text in XML that can be read by P3P-enabled browsers - IE 6.0 and Netscape 7.0. Users can set their browsers to a desired level of protection. RBC Financial Services was named as one of the few Canadian companies that have adopted this so far.

Sympatico: BCE Inc is trying to buy back Terra Networks' share of Sympatico. Terra Networks owns Lycos with whom Bell had partnered for some software and services during the heyday of portals. Lycos received a 29% stake, but a report in the Globe and Mail says Sympatico makes very llittle use of Lycos's services such as Wired Online, Tripod etc and actually uses Google for Web search.

Canadian Cultural Web Directory: Larry Bruder in Winnipeg responded to an article in Information Highways - Where's Cancon Canada's cultural conundrum online (March/April 2002) -
to draw attention to the Canadian Cultural Web Directory (http://www.artscanadian.com/egate.htm) . Bruder launched the directory in January 2000 and states that there are about 2,500 links. The site is run as a Java Applet. Categories cover visual arts, performing arts, film/video, spoken word, festivals, museums and more.
Amazon.ca Amazon comes to Canada. The site was launched on June 25, 2002. Some booksellers are concerned (especially Indigo) and Canadian Booksellers Association will be taking up the matter with Heritage Canada. Still - distribution will be done through Canadian companies - Canada Post's warehouse in Mississauga and BookExpress in Vancouver.
