Online Shopping: Canada has the wherewithall for e-commerce but not quite the will or interest. A Booz Allen Hamilton study found that Canada had one of the best environments for e-commerce, but another study shows that Canadians don't complete online purchase transactions. SHipping costs are one reason. Poor design another. On the other hand, a study by VISA estimated that online holiday shopping will be 60% higher this year than last.

The Department of Justice has proposed that ISPs "install equipment that can record each individual's Web surfing, correspondence and instant messages to sniff out child porn viewers, adult lurers of minors and computer virus writers. "

You can browse or search with keywords - but in either case it helps to know exactly what you want. The list of best sellers is interesting - Pension Plan is #1 and Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water #5. Site has a feature for finding the closest Depository Library.

War Veterans: A digital historical

War Veterans: A digital historical archive of the personal histories of Canada's war veterans is being built up at http://www.testaments.ca/ - one of Canada's Digital Collections. The book by Blake Heathcote was published in October 2002 but the project is a continuing one. The web site has photographs, video clips, information on veterans, testimonies of veterans, and news about the project.

Jennifer Hardenne in the Globe and Mail (Nov 13, 2002) called it a "handy one-stop resource for people with special needs who are planning to travel to an unfamiliar Canadian destination and don't know where to turn to make travel arrangements".

Public Safety: The Government of Canada has opened a Public Safety Portal at http://www.safecanada.ca/. This is part of the Government Online initiative. Lots of very good information regarding day-to-day alerts and recalls, travel, health, internet ...

"The Web site contains links to 25 federal departments and agencies responsible for some aspect of public safety or security. The Family and Home section of the site covers 13 subject categories, including Internet safety for children, safety in sports and travel, seniors' security, child protection and victim assistance.
