E-Commerce: Canada's on-line report card

E-Commerce: Canada's on-line report card by Kevin Marron. Globe and Mail (May 21, 2003) -- Canadian E-business Initiative (CeBi) studied Canadian small and medium businesses and compared their use of e-commerce to United States and European Union.

"CeBi's e-report card assesses the performance of Canada's SME sector in nine different e-business-related subjects, grading each of these in one of four categories: progressing rapidly, progressing, paused or falling behind. A tally of the results shows Canadian SME e-business progressing rapidly in one area, progressing in four others, paused in three and falling behind in one."

- Over 75% of Canadian businesses had Internet access.
- Canadian consumers are online (63%) but they don't shop.
- Security and privacy are worries that no one seems to be addressing.
- Shortage of people with technical skills. (Where did all the Nortel people go?)
- "Canadian firms lead the world in adopting financial and customer service solutions, they lag in the use of supply-chain management and sales force automation tools."
- Also "lack of affordable tools and services" - vendors don't build products for small and medium businesses.
- Fortunately there is still some venture capital.

Canadian Business: Canadian Business magazine

Canadian Business: Canadian Business magazine is celebrating its 75th year with a review of events, greatest companies, and leading businessmen in Canada during the year. There is a special web edition -- 75th Anniversary Special. Here you'll find an interactive timeline (uses Flash 5) beginning in the 1920s of events that affected the economy. There is also a series of articles on 75 of Canada's greatest companies. The kickoff, in 75th position, was Cirque du Soleil. Great business minds make up the Live and Learn. Already placed on the firmament are Honest Ed, Thomas Bata (no Ted Rogers - perhaps later in the year). The Covers Gallery (also Flash 5) shows the artwork since the 1920s.
